To lead is to influence

We constantly make choices.

Most of these are unconscious choices.

This is very important in creating influence.

Every time you are wanting to influence a person to do something their decision will always be based on whether they believe it will bring them closer to happiness.

Which is based on how they understand happiness.

This is where good leadership connects with influencing.

Good leaders bring a sense of purpose that people get.

Influence, broadly defined, is the ability to move a person or persons to a desired action usually within the context of a specific goal.

Influence is attraction. Genuine influencers attract people to themselves and then to their idea.

A great influencer always asks the question how does what I am asking them to do align with their goals and values?

Looking at it from this perspective it is about building everyone up.

It’s the true win-win where everyone comes better off than they were before.

Author Bob Burg of the “Go Giver” Book Series states the five steps to being a good influencer are :

Master your emotions
Step into the other persons shoes
Set the context
Communicate with tact & empathy
Let go of having to be right

Consistently follow these and your personal influence will open the path to take you where you want to go as a leader.
